The Centre's HistoryEndsleigh Convent was the third home in Hull of the Sisters of Mercy, who had come from Clifford to start the works of Mercy so dear to their foundress, Catherine McAuley. After some years in Wilton Street, and then in Anlaby Road, they moved to Endsleigh in 1901, to accommodate the growing number of Sisters and pupils. For the next 93 years the Sisters developed their work in Education, in Primary and Secondary Schools. The College of Education was founded here in 1905. Endsleigh House, now re-furbished as flats and renamed Dawson House, was the original building, with adjacent wings added as student numbers increased, and more land was purchased. Over the years, the Sisters trained generations of students, which by 1966 numbered upwards of 700. Eventually in 1974, as a result of the government policy, the college joined five other Humberside Colleges in a merger, and the College buildings were sold. Endsleigh House was leased for the beginning of the Humberside Hospice Project and re-named Dove House. When they left, it was taken over by Humberside Polytechnic for administration purposes and re-named Wyke House The Community continued in the remaining buildings, carrying out the works of mercy, until 1995 when the Institute of Our Lady of Mercy (of which Endsleigh had become a part in 1983), took the decision to use Endsleigh as a Pastoral, Retreat and Conference Centre. Since then the Centre has developed an enriching spiritual programme of half-days of Prayer, Days of Recollection and Residential Retreats. It has a small Lending Library of books on spiritual and religious topics It is an Ideal venue for Conferences and In-Service Days, whilst many local groups use it for regular evening sessions. Its latest venture is Bed & Breakfast accommodation, and also Holidays with a planned programme of visits to local places of Interest.
